PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small-sized and light-weight image pickup optical system suitable for so called a digital still camera using a solid-state electronic image pickup element and capable of recording a high-definition image. SOLUTION: An image pickup device having a transmittance distribution type filter 711 has a small Fno and high resolving power but its photographing feasible viewing angle is small. On the other hand, an image pickup device having a transmittance distribution type filter 712 has a comparatively large Fno and low resolving power but can perform photographing at a wide viewing angle. By using the filters with the transmittance distribution having a different diameter for the respective devices, different characteristic is given to them. The transmittance distribution type filter 1 is constituted of the filters 711 and 712. The image of an object is formed on the solid-state electronic image pickup element 3 by the filter 1 and an image-formation lens 2.
