PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an aqueous emulsion high in viscosity and excellent in water resistance and adhesivety to woody materials, and to provide an adhesive for woodworking use comprising the above emulsion. SOLUTION: The subject aqueous emulsion composition is obtained by compounding (A) an aqueous emulsion containing a polymer composed of vinyl ester-based monomer unit as dispersoid and a vinyl alcohol-based polymer containing 0.5-10 mol% of ethylene unit and having a saponification degree of >=95 mol% as dispersant with (B) a water-soluble polymer which is a water- soluble polyvinyl alcohol 1,000-8,000 in viscosity-average polymerization degree and 70-95 mol% in saponification degree or a water-soluble cellulose derivative 1,000-8,000 mPa.s in 2% aqueous solution viscosity.
