PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a polymer containing a functional group at a main chain terminal, applicable to polymerizations of various kinds of vinyl compounds by a living radical polymerization method capable of narrowing a molecular weight distribution while controlling the molecular weight of an obtained polymer, capable of simply producing a polymer into which a functional group such as a hydroxy group, a protected hydroxy group, etc., is introduced without introducing a halogen atom into the terminal part of a polymer main chain. SOLUTION: A radical-polymerizable monomer is subjected to a living radical polymerization in the presence of a living radical polymerization initiator containing a transition metal complex and an organohalogen compound, then a living terminal of the formed polymer is reacted with a specific silylenol ether as a living radical polymerization terminator to stop the living radical polymerization while introducing the functional group to the main chain terminal of the polymer.
