PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a preserving agent for an ophthalmic solution having high safety and usable in a wide region. SOLUTION: This preserving agent for an ophthalmic solution contains polylysine and/or protamine, and it further contains at least one kind of neutral or basic amino acid selected from glycine, alanine, arginine and histidine, or its salt. The preserving agent-containing ophthalmic solution is prepared by adding polylysine, protamine, glycine, alanine, arginine and histidine, respectively to an ophthalmic solution, subsequently adjusting the pH value to 7.0 with a 1N sodium hydroxide aqueous solution or a 1N hydrochloric acid aqueous solution, and further adding sterilized purified water.
