1,145,025. Copolymers containing phenanthrene rings. SOC. NATIONALE DES PETROLES D'AQUITAINE. 14 April, 1966 [20 April, 1965], No. 16447/66. Heading C3P. Copolymers containing groups with a phenanthrene ring are prepared by polymerizing a mixture of at least one olefine with a resinic acid derivative having a phenanthrene nucleus in the presence of a catalytic system which includes an alkyl compound of one or more metals of Groups I, II and III and a halide of a transition metal of one of Groups IV, V or VI. The Groups of elements are those of the Periodic System on pages 60 and 61 of " Fundamental Chemistry " by H. G. Denning, Second Edition. The copolymers may be of high molecular weight, practically linear, amorphous and unsaturated. Preferred derivatives are those of neo-abietic, pimaric and isopimaric acid, e.g. a metal salt or an ester of a resinic acid, of the general formula C 20 H 30 O 2 , having one intranuclear double bond and one extranuclear double bond. In the examples ethylene and propylene are copolymerized with magnesium neo-abietate, cobalt neo-abietate, iron neoabietate, aluminium pimarate and zinc isopimarate in the presence of VOCl 3 , diethyl aluminium chloride, cyclohexane and benzene. The copolymers may be vulcanized with sulphur or a free radical former. |
