PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal transfer printer in which a high print speed can be realized by reducing the moving amount of a thermal head between a waiting position and a press contact position without causing run out of a ribbon thereby shortening the moving time of the thermal head. SOLUTION: The thermal transfer printer is provided with a mechanism 35 for controlling the passage of a ribbon head part which shifts an ink ribbon R located between a thermal head 6 and a platen 2 to a position closer to the platen 2 side than the thermal head 6 when the thermal head 6 is located at a waiting position.
