1,034,349. Power steering. HYDROSTEER Ltd. May 19, 1965 [Sept. 18, 1964], No. 38164/64. Heading B7H. In a power-assisted steering mechanism, which may be a rack-and-pinion mechanism, in which the power assistance is controlled by a rotary valve, which may be of the open or closed centre type, the functioning of which is by the relative rotation of two parts through the intermediary of a resilient member, e.g. a torsion bar, means are provided (a rotary member 7 having an eccentric 7A engaging a slot 6 in one part 5, Fig. 1, not shown), for moving one valve part axially relatively to the other, the co-operating valve ports and lands being so shaped, as indicated by the lines 4C, 5B in Fig. 3, or 9A, 9C, 10A, 10C and 10B in Fig. 4, whereby the axial movement in one direction or the other exposes a greater or less exposure area between the ducts for the transmission of fluid in one direction or the other, so that the adjustment may provide for a fluid balance, or for a bias of pressure in one direction or the other. The adjustment device (7) extends beyond the valve casing and may be operated locally or by remote control.
|
