Polyketides and their synthesis

The complete sequence of the gene cluster for the monensin type I polyketide synthase, from S. cinnamonensis, is provided. Thus variant polyketides containing monensin-derived elements can be genetically engineered. Furthermore there are features, e.g. a regulatory protein mon RI, which are of wide utility.
