PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic detection system for a multiplex access communication channel in a communication system, which sets the multiplex access communication channel consisting of a set of one time slot or over to a line including one network interconnecting communication units and that can facilitate setting of a communication channel to a communication unit using a time division multiplex function. SOLUTION: The communication unit is provided with a fixed pattern generating section that transmits a fixed pattern to a designated multiplexed access communication channel and with a fixed pattern detection section. The communication unit setting a set of one time slot or more configuring a communication channel designates the communication channel for a pause period to transmit the fixed pattern, and the communication unit of an opposite party side selects one time slot of the channel and detects the fixed pattern. The communication unit of the opposite party changes the set of the time slots being an object of detection when not detecting the fixed pattern so as to detect the fixed pattern thereby detecting the communication channel consisting of the set of the time slots.
