PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform proper contour correction all the time by amplifying a contour component signal with a proper gain even when the contour component signal extracted by a contour extracting circuit is positive or negative. SOLUTION: In the contour emphasizing circuit provided with the contour extracting circuit for extracting a contour component from an input video signal and a gain control circuit for amplifying the contour component signal extracted by this contour extracting circuit, the gain control circuit decides the (positive/negative) code of the contour component signal extracted by the contour extracting circuit, the gain is changed corresponding to whether the contour component signal is positive or negative, and the contour component signal is amplified with the proper gain respectively.
