PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress overshoot in simple circuit configuration with a little gates and to provide desired contour compensation characteristics without ringing or waveform distortion. SOLUTION: Concerning digital input luminance data Yin, in a primary difference detecting circuit 10, an absolute value A and the polarity of a primary difference, which is the difference of data values between a certain pixel and a pixel preceding for one clock, are detected. In a secondary difference detecting circuit 20, an absolute value B and the polarity of a secondary difference, which is the difference in the absolute value A of the primary difference between a certain pixel and a pixel preceding for one clock, are detected. In a secondary difference encoder 30, contour compensation control circuit 40, gain level control circuit 50, contour compensation component generation selecting circuit 60 and contour compensation component superimposing circuit 70, when the primary difference is positive, the absolute value A of the primary difference is added to the original luminance data Yin and when the primary difference is negative, the absolute value A of the primary difference is subtracted from the original luminance data Yin as a contour compensation component F with a small gain as the absolute value B of the secondary difference increases when the secondary difference is negative.
