PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical axis detecting device and method for a headlight providing superior workability and processing at a high speed. SOLUTION: This optical axis detecting device for the headlight is provided with a storage means 14 storing integrated values of illuminance from a plurality of points on a screen decided based on the maximum illuminance points of light distribution of a reference headlight to a reference cutoff line as respective reference integrated value groups, an integrating means 13 calculating the integrated value of the illuminance in a prescribed range from a plurality of points on the screen decided based on the maximum illuminance points of the light distribution of a target headlight as respective target integrated value groups, and a cutoff line derivation means 15 setting a point whose target integrated value group is coincided with the reference integrated value group to a light-dark boundary point and setting the most approximate one to the reference cutoff line out of a plurality of approximate straight lines calculated from the light-dark boundary point group, in an image processing device.
