PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress an electrical gain increase in an image pickup device, and also, to reduce noise components coexisting in a luminance signal. SOLUTION: As for the image pickup device 100 capable of replacing a lens 11 with a diaphragm driving mechanism 16, the device 100 is provided with an image pickup processing means 12 for controlling the diaphragm driving mechanism based on the luminance signal obtained after the light made incident from the lens 11 is converted to an electrical signal, a gain adjusting means 13 for adjusting the level of the luminance signal obtained from the image pickup processing means 12, a setting means 15 for setting target information on the output level of the luminance signal by the gain adjusting means 13, and a control means 14 for detecting the luminance signal obtained from the gain adjusting means 13 and also comparing the target information set by the setting means 15 with the detection information on the luminance signal, and by the control of the control means 14 based on the target information and the detection information, the control of the diaphragm driving mechanism by the image pickup processing means 12 is performed prior to the gain adjusting control of the luminance signal.
