PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a surface acoustic wave device where a side band and a small size can be realized and a loss can be reduced by using the characteristic of a natural 1-phase type unidirectional converter. SOLUTION: The surface acoustic wave device is provided with a piezoelectric substrate 1 and a pair of interdigital electrodes 2 in provided on one main surface of this substrate 1. A single crystal which belongs to the group of dots 32, has a Ca3Ga2Ge4 O14 type crystal structure, has its main components consisting of La, Ta, Ga and O and is expressed by a chemical formula La3Ta0.5 Ga5.5 O14 is used for the material of the substrate 1. When the segmenting angle and the propagating direction of the substrate 1 are expressed as (ϕ,θ,ϕ) by Euler angle expression,ϕ,θ, andϕexist in the first area ofϕ-5 deg. To 5 deg.,θ=135 deg. to 155 deg. andϕ=15 deg. to 40 deg. or the second area ofϕ=10 deg. to 20 deg.,θ=140 deg. to 157 deg. andϕ=30 deg. to 60 deg..
