PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure display brightness of a PDP by controlling increase in address drivers of the PDP even when sub-fields are increased in the number to reduce moving pseudo images. SOLUTION: The sub-fields SF1-SF8 are divided into a 1st sub-field group (SF7, SF8) and a 2nd sub-field group (SF1-SF6); further the 1st sub-field group is divided into sub-fields D1-D4 of 64 gradations each; when an odd-numbered horizontal line 2n-1 of the PDT is selected, an even-numbered horizontal line 2n is synchronously selected; the 1st and 2nd sub-field groups are allocated to the odd-numbered horizontal line 2n-1 and also the 2nd sub-field group and the sub-fields D1, D3 are allocated to the even-numbered horizontal line; and as for the sub-fields D2, D4, they are allocated to the even-numbered horizontal line 2n when an odd-numbered horizontal line 2n+1 is selected.
