Catalyst comprising at least one element of group VIII and at least one element of group VIb comprising molybdenum on appropriate support, where: the support is a porous solid; the density of molybdenum, expressed as percentage weight of molybdenum oxide (MoO 3) per unit area is greater than 0.07; and catalyst has a surface area of less than 190 m 2>/g, is new. An independent claim is included for the preparation of the catalyst.
