PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium, using a perpendicular magnetic recording system which has a structure with superior S/N for the medium. SOLUTION: In the magnetic recording medium, having a nonmagnetic substrate and a servo layer patterned into stripes extending in the radial direction and a perpendicular magnetic recording layer, with both layers formed on the nonmagnetic substrate and separated from each other, a soft magnetic layer is formed between the servo layer and the perpendicular magnetic recording layer.
