PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for driving a plasma display panel capable of keeping high contrast by reducing background brightness, and also reducing a moving picture false contour of by controlling variations in video brightness. SOLUTION: One frame is composed of 12 pieces of sub-fields SF1-SF12, and only SF2, SF4, SF6, SF8, SF10, and SF12 have a preliminary discharge period. Therefore, for example, the sub-field SF12 is never selected without selecting the sub-field SF11. Moreover, when a sub-field SFi is weighted in brightness with Li, each weight is set so as to satisfy the relations of L1=L2=1, and Ln+2<=Ln+1+Ln. Then, as long as this inequality is satisfied, the sub-fields for expressing the same gradation level are freely selected and combined, and can be selected according to a picture to be displayed. Therefore, this method is provided with redundancy compared with a conventional driving method. |
