PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrophoretic color display device giving the desired color image and having superior display quality. SOLUTION: One or more pairs of transparent substrates are placed opposite to each other by way of a partition wall in such a way that transparent electrodes attached to the substrates confront each other and a closed space is formed by the substrates and the partition wall. This space is filled with a dispersion prepared by dispersing microcapsules including an electrophoretic display fluid containing a liquid-phase colored dispersion medium having a hue selected from magenta, cyan and yellow and photoelectric cell coated white particles, such microcapsules having one of the remaining hues and such microcapsules having the other. The half of the surface of each of the microcapsules has been coated with a coating film which transmits only light reflected by the liquid-phase colored dispersion medium in the microcapsule. The photoelectric cell is preferably amorphous silicon and the coating film preferably comprises a porphine derivative subjected to photochemical hole burning treatment.
