PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a motor capable of switching between motor mode and braking mode without need for a commutating-pole coil or any other auxiliary coil for the prevention of intensification of brush sparks. SOLUTION: The brake type series motor is especially suitable as universal motor for machine tools. The stator (80) included in the motor is provided with at least two field poles (90, 110) and each of the field poles has pole tips (92, 112) provided with leading tips (94, 114) and pole tips (96, 116) provided with trailing tips. The pole tips (96, 116) provided with the trailing tips (98, 118) are shorter than the pole tips (92, 112) provided with the leading tips (94, 114) as seen in the circumferential direction or have at least one notch (102, 122) extending in the circumferential direction.
