PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compound capable of generating a marked hue change in the presence of carbohydrate to visually detect carbohydrate. SOLUTION: A 4, 4'-diaminoazobenzene derivative represented by formula (1) (wherein, at least one of R1, R2, R3 and R4 is a phenylboronate group and other three of them are each independently a hydrogen atom, a lower aliphatic group or a monocyclic aromatic group) is disclosed. Since this compound generates a marked absorption spectrum change within a visible region in the presence of carbohydrate in an aqueous solution of a neutral pH region, it is useful as a carbohydrate detection agent of various carbohydrates, especially, monosaccharides and disaccharides.
