A novel retard fertilizer (I) consists of fertilizer granules coated with starch esters (II) having a degree of substitution of 1.8-2.6. An independent claim is included for the preparation of a fertilizer (I) providing long-term action and controlled active agent release, to supply the required nutrients for crops throughout the growth period, involving passing fertilizer granules through a two-phase system consisting of a solution of (II) in a water-immiscible solvent (as upper phase) and water. - ACTIVITY : Fertilizer. - MECHANISM OF ACTION : None given.
