Azide-functional silanes (I) and oligosilanes (II) are used as crosslinking agents in coating compositions. Azide-functional silanes (I) of formula N3-R<3>-SiR<1>n(OR<2>)3-n (Ia) and/or N3O2S-R<3>-SiR<1>n(OR<2>)3-n (Ib) and oligosilanes (II) comprising groups of formula N3R<3>- (IIa) and/or N3O2S-R<3>- (IIb) and groups of formula -SiR<1>n(OR<2>)3-n (IIc) />SiR<1>n(OR<2>)2-n (IId) />SiR<1> (IIe) and/or />Si(OR<2>) (IIf) are used as crosslinking agents in coating compositions: R<1> = 1-3C alkyl, phenyl, benzyl or tolyl; R<2> = 1-4C alkyl, 2-4C alkoxyalkyl, phenyl or benzyl; R<3> = 1-8C alkanediyl optionally interrupted by O, S or NR<4>; R<4> = H, Me, Et or phenyl; n = 0-2.
