Production of a green compact made from a magnetic rare earth alloy powder comprises preparing a controlled environment having a temperature of 30 deg C or less and a relative moisture of 65 % or less; and pressing the powder in the environment. Preferred Features: The process further comprises quenching a molten alloy at a speed of 10<2> - 10<4> deg C/s; and pulverizing the quenched alloy forming a rare earth metal alloy powder. A lubricant is added to the rare earth metal alloy powder before pressing.
