The complete sequence of the gene cluster for the monensin type I polyketide synthase, from <i>S. cinnamonensis</i>, is provided. Thus variant polyketides containing monensin-derived elements can be genetically engineered. Furthermore there are features, e.g. a regulatory protein <i>mon RI</i>, which are of wide utility.
