Applying a metal layer to surfaces of light metals comprises electrolytically depositing on the surfaces iron from a deposition bath containing iron (II) compounds using dimensionally stable anodes soluble in the bath. The iron (II) compounds are formed in a reaction of iron (III) compounds produced during oxidation of the iron (II) compounds at the anodes. The current density is increased so that the anodic current yield for the oxidation of the iron (II) compounds to the iron (III) compounds is as large as the cathodic current yield for the iron deposition from the bath. Preferred Features: The deposition bath additionally contains hypophosphite, orthophosphite, molybdenum or tungsten compounds. The surfaces of the light metal are coated with aluminum, magnesium and/or their alloys.
