An apparatus for analyzing a spectrum includes an elongated source of light (115), a device for producing a spectrum of the light (125), a sample stage (200), and an array of photosensitive elements (130) for detecting the spectrum and providing an output representative of an intensity of the spectrum as a function of wavelength. The sample stage (200) is interposed between the elongated source (115) and the spectrum-producing device (125). The light propagates along a length of the sample stage (200) from the elongated source (115) to the spectrum-producing device (125). The elongated source (115) has a length greater than or equal to a length of the array (130).
