A system and method for providing a communication centric service for automating business processes or workflows. A set of information is stored that defines a sequence of tasks for completing a workflow. Upon completion of a task, an incoming message associated with the task is routed to an incoming message queue. A workflow engine continuously monitors the incoming queue for incoming messages. Once the workflow engine receives the incoming message, the workflow engine reads the message and initiates one or more activities for completing one or more tasks associated with the incoming message. The system and method also includes a tool for creating and executing data interchange operations. Data interchange operations are operations by which a source object located at a source object location are transformed or mapped into target objects and saved at target object locations.
