Force transfer unit with gear position indicator

A force transfer unit is provided between first and second hand operated shift control units (42, 46) and first and second bicycle transmissions. First and second inner wires interconnect the hand operated shift control units (42, 46) and the bicycle transmissions. First and second gear indicators (134, 138) are disposed in a housing (150) for indicating the gear positions of the first and second bicycle transmissions. The gear indicators move in response to a diverting movement of the first and second wires (120, 130). The transfer unit is spaced apart from the first and second hand operated shift control units (42, 46) and preferably is mounted in a central portion of a handlebar of a bicycle.
