Method and kit for making a hermetically sealed package for a fiber optic device (10) enable assembly of the package without having to connect the device with fiber ends inside the casing. The device is pre-assembled and placed in a first split-wall partial housing having partial feedthrough means (22). A second partial annular housing having a venting opening and partial feedthrough means (23) is placed over the first partial housing such that an open package with fiber feedthrough is formed.
