PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus and its control method having excellent reliability in which a high quality image of good finish can be formed constantly by automatically adjusting the position of a laser beam optimally at all times in the direction orthogonal to the scanning direction. SOLUTION: A laser beam is condensed partially to a photoelectric conversion element 60 immediately before scanning a photosensitive drum 21 and the position of the laser beam is adjusted in the direction orthogonal to the scanning direction of laser beam depending on the output from the photoelectric conversion element 60.
