PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for improving the mechanical strengths of a polyurethane resin used as a hydrophilic resin for immobilizing an enzyme or microorganism cells and a method of manufacturing granular formed bodies having enough strength. SOLUTION: This method of preparing granular formed bodies for immobilizing an enzyme or microorganism cells comprises the dropwise addition of an aqueous liquid composition composed of (a) a hydrophilic urethane resin, which has at least two ethylenically unsaturated bonds in a molecule, obtained by reacting an adduct of a diepoxy compound and an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid with a polyisocyanate compound, (b) a polymerization initiator, (c) a water-soluble polymeric polysaccharide having an activity to gel by the contact with an alkali metal ion or a polyvalent metal ion, to an aqueous solvent co containing an alkali metal ion or a polyvalent metal ion to gelatinize the composition into a granular state, or the continuous pouring of the aqueous composition on the surface of the aqueous solvent over a specified period to grow the liquid drops to a desired particle size and subsequently depositing the liquid drops to convert the drops to gel. Subsequently, the obtained granular gel is subjected to photopolymerization and/or thermal polymerization to harden the hydrophilic resin in the granular gel.
