PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gear unit allowing assembling to be performed simply and with good accuracy, and capable of steplessly adjusting the angle of a backrest by simple operation and attaining smooth operation in tilting the backrest. SOLUTION: This gear unit 10 for adjusting the angle of the backrest is provided between a seat frame 1 and a back frame 3. This unit is provided with a pair of gear mechanisms 3A, 3B and a connecting shaft 4 and a connecting plate 5 disposed between both gear mechanisms 3A, 3B. Both gear mechanisms 3A, 3B constitute the taumel mechanism having a seat side fitting 11, a back side hardware 21, an outer gear 6a provided on the seat side fitting 11, an inner gear 6b provided on the back side fitting 21, and rotation operating shafts 7A, 7B penetrating both gears 6a, 6b. The rotation operation shafts 7A, 7B in the both gear mechanisms 3A, 3B are connected to each other by the connecting shaft 4, and the seat side fittings are connected to each other by the connecting plate 5.
