PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new malic acid derivative having an alicyclic group bonded to the carbon atom at the 3-position, and further to obtain a new oxalacetic acid derivative having a specific alicyclic group bonded to the carbon atom at the 3-position. SOLUTION: This malic acid or oxalacetic acid derivative is represented by formula (1) (wherein, ring Z is an alicyclic carbon ring; Ra and Rb are each same or different hydrogen atom, metal atom or organic group; Y is hydroxy group or oxygen atom; with the proviso that when Y is the oxygen atom, the ring Z is a bridged carbon ring or an eight- or more-membered monocyclic carbon ring). The alicyclic carbon ring includes a cyclooctane ring, an adamantane ring, or the like.
