PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a substitute, as a primary intermediate, more superior than p-phenylenediamine in a hairdye composition and hairdye system and more stable than 2-(2-hydroxyethyl)-p-phenylenediamine which is a readily producible intermediate in a free base shape. SOLUTION: This primary intermediate is 1-(2,5-diaminophenyl)ethanol. The method for producing the primary intermediate comprises (a) preparing 1-(2- amino-5-nitrophenol)ethanone, (b) reducing the 1-(2-amino-5-nitrophenol)ethanone to provide 1-(2-amino-5-nitrophenyl)ethanol, and (c) hydrogenating the 1-(2- amino-5-nitrophenyl)ethanol to convert the nitro group into an amino group.
