A crystalline polyaldehyde is produced by polymerizing in an inert liquid medium at -20 DEG to -120 DEG C. at least one monoaldehyde containing 2 to 10 carbon atoms per molecule and of formula RCHO where R is an alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkenyl or cycloalkenyl group or such a group substituted by halogen or R represents a heterocyclic group having a five or six membered ring containing oxygen, in the presence as catalyst of a hydride of a metal of Group II or an organometallic compound containing a metal of Group II together with alumina or a compound of alumina with at least one oxide of a metal of Group II, III, IV, V or VIa. The catalyst is preferably prepared by mixing the constituents at between room temperature and 100 DEG C. |
