A composite stone slab (50, 82, 102, 112) includes a tessellating array of stone tiles (60, 90) having finished faces (62, 92) in a strictly coplanar relationship for having been assembled against a planar work surface (72) with the unfinished faces (64, 94) exposed. Abutting side surfaces (68, 96) of adjacent tiles (60, 90) are secured by a bonding region (100) of stone-penetrating adhesive (98) that traverses the seam at the abutting side surfaces and is enmeshed in the porous matrix of each adjacent tile (60, 90). The array is secured by a layer of mastic (78) to a substrate (80) that is attached to a support structure (84) at a predetermined installation location. Optionally, beveled edges (66) encircle the unfinished faces (64) of tiles (60), resulting in short side surfaces (68). The beveled edges (66) result in grooves (74) between unfinished faces (64) of adjacent tiles (60) in the array, which may be filled with tacking adhesive (76). |
