The invention relates to a liquid-crystal display having a liquid-crystal cell 1 which is formed by two substrates 2 disposed at a distance from one another and is filled with a nematic liquid-crystal substance 4. Disposed on the substrates 2 on the sides inside the cell there are electrode layers 3, to which voltage can be applied. Outside the cell, a birefringent compensation layer (5,9) extends over the cell surface. Liquid-crystal cell 1 and compensation layer are arranged between two polarising filters 11. The compensating layer (5,9) is designed, over its areal extent, with a multiplicity of regions adjacent to one another, whose optical delay values (d.
