Hydroxychavicol (I) (i.e. 3,4-dihydroxy-allylbenzene) is used as an antimicrobial active agent effective against bacteria of genus Pseudomonas, especially Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA). Independent claims are included for: (i) a method of inhibiting the growth of PA, by contacting with an antimicrobial amount of (I); (ii) a method for inhibiting the growth of PA in or on industrial, cosmetic or pharmaceutical articles (or for providing an anti-PA microbial finish on such articles), comprises application of (I); (iii) industrial, cosmetic or pharmaceutical formulations comprises (I) in an amount effective against PA and one or more other antimicrobial agent(s) (II), where the formulation has at least 4-fold stronger activity against PA than a comparative (I)-free formulation; and (iv) industrial, cosmetic or pharmaceutical articles at least partially provided with a PA-resistant finish containing (I), where the articles have better protection against attack by PA or growth of PA than articles given a corresponding (I)-free finish. - ACTIVITY : Antibacterial; fungicide; dermatological; antiseborrheic. The minimum inhibitory concentration of (I) against PA or Candida albicans is 34 ppm. - MECHANISM OF ACTION : None given. |
