The invention relates to a method for regenerating a NOx storage catalyst (3) which is configured as a honeycomb (7) coated with adsorbent material, through which exhaust gas can flow and which is positioned in the exhaust system (2) of a diesel or lean-mixture engine (1). According to the invention, as it is recognised that the efficiency of the regeneration increases with the flow speed of the exhaust gas in the honeycomb (7), the duration of the regeneration phase and/or the quantity of hydrocarbons that are supplied to the exhaust system (2) per time unit during said regeneration phase is selected, based on the volumetric flow of the exhaust gas per free cross-sectional surface of the honeycomb (7). In a corresponding exhaust gas purification system of a diesel or lean-mixture motor (1) for reducing the emission of NOx, which comprises an NOx storage catalyst (3), configured as a honeycomb (7) coated with adsorbent material containing passages (4) through which exhaust gas can flow and an oxidation catalyst (5) which is preferably positioned downstream of said storage catalyst, the dimensions of the honeycomb (7) coated with adsorbent material are such that it induces the highest possible flow speeds in its interior, whilst taking into consideration the maximum pressure drop that can be tolerated. The regeneration is thus carried out using a minimal amount of fuel, reducing both the fuel consumption of the internal combustion engine (1) and environmental pollution. |
