863,479. Lathe &c. tools. HERTEL, K. Dec. 9, 1958 [Dec. 10, 1957], No. 39642/58. Class 83 (3). A lathe &c. tool comprises a " throw-away " cutter 11 in a recess 8<SP>1</SP> extending obliquely into a tool-holder 6<SP>1</SP>, the recess converging in crosssection towards its inner end and providing three walls engaged by corresponding walls of the cutter. The triangular cutter shown is bevelled on both faces to form edges 21, 31, 41; face A and bevelled faces B, C engaging walls of recess 8<SP>1</SP>. A pointed grub-screw 131, in screw-threads in the tool-holder, may engage the edges of a hole in the cutter, and a soft protection pad 11<SP>1</SP> backed by a cutter-ejection screw 101 bears against the lower corner of the cutter. In a modification including a spring-pressed pin 26, Fig. 12, for preventing escape of the cutter 1<SP>11</SP>, and a chip-breaker 19 with a bevelled insert 20, the cutter-recess 8<SP>11</SP> is in a conical insert 14 fixed in the tool-holder of softer material by solder or an adhesive. A screw 22 engages screw-threads in the tool-holder and insert 14 to secure the bifurcated shank of chip-breaker 19 to the tool-holder. A hole 29 in pin 26 is engaged by the return-spring 31, 32, which is housed in a groove 33. Withdrawal of pin 26 is by a key (Fig. 21, not shown), having a flange to engage an annular groove 38 in the pin. An ejection-pin may pass through a passage 16 in the tool-holder and insert. A plug 39 prevents the ingress of swarf into hole 23 for screw 22. |
