PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polymer dispersion liquid crystal device, having satisfactory phase separation between a liquid crystal material and a matrix resin. SOLUTION: The matrix resin 44 having the dispersion of a liquid crystal material 41 in a light-controlling layer 40 consists of a mixture of a soluble polymer material 42 and a hardened polymer material 43 prepared by hardening a photopolymerizable monomer. When the device is manufactured, by using the two-beam interference exposure of laser light for a mixture solution of the liquid crystal material, a soluble polymer material, a photopolymerizable monomer and a polymerization initiator, the photopolymerizable monomer is hardened through photopolymerization by the interference exposure to cause phase separation, while the soluble polymer material causes phases separation from the liquid crystal material and is formed near the liquid crystal material. Thus, a thin film of the soluble polymer material is formed between the liquid crystal material and the hardened polymer material, which increases the difference in the refractive index between the liquid crystal material and the matrix resin. The obtained liquid crystal optical device shows satisfactory contrast and low drive voltage.
