摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem of a wavelength conversion using four light wave mixing where the connection of different WDM systems formed without correlation to each other at a low cost is not possible, since there is heretofore available only the method of making simultaneous wavelength conversion of the wide-band WDM signals. SOLUTION: Only the signal light of the wavelength subjected to the wavelength conversion is attracted from the wide-band WDM signals and is subjected to the wavelength conversion utilizing FWM. The frequency interval of the fresh WDM signals subjected to the wavelength conversion is made wider or narrower than the wavelength interval of the original WDM signal. Such signal arrangement which allows more effective utilization of the ability of the respective transmission paths is constituted between the transmission path which is liable to be affected by cross talks and the transmission path, which is hardly affected by utilizing this wavelength conversion device, by which the transmission and reception of the WDM signals are made possible.
