The mandrel comprises a shaft whose front end has the shape of a frontward pointing truncated cone (7). An expandable sleeve (15) is made from a ring with longitudinal slots which slide on the conical end. A piston (8) is guided in a cylindrical bore along the shaft. Sliding of the piston drives the sleeve so as to control the clamping or unclamping of a part to be machined. The front end of the piston has the shape of a rearward pointing truncated cone. The sleeve interior wall has the shape of two successive head to toe cone sections.
