The knitted product, and especially a beret, has two panels (L,R) linked together by a pillar stitch (1). The pillar stitch (1) has two side sections (1R,1L) shifted to lock with the edge stitches (An) of the panels (L,R). The center section (1M) has the yarns in a zigzag (Fn) between the side sections ((1R,1L). The pillar stitch (1) has stitches (Mn) for both side parts, with the link yarns (Fn) between them forming the intermediate section. Both side panels (L,R) have edge stitches (An), offset from each other by a row (n) so that the link yarns (Fn) pass around them in a zigzag joining action. The side parts (1R,1L) of the pillar stitch (1) are placed at the inner side of the knitted article. An Independent claim is included for a knitting process using a flatbed knitter, with two needle beds, where at least one bed can be racked. The needles of the two beds can transfer the stitches between them. In a single stage or two repeats, one or two stitches are formed on an edge needle separated from the other needles occupied by the stitches by an empty needle. The trailing bed is racked to the right by three edge needles and the double stitch is transferred to the opposite needle bed. The process is repeated to form the pillar stitch (1) progressively. The knitting action is symmetrical from right to left, where the leading bed becomes the trailing bed and back, and left becomes right and back.
