PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a recording medium by high density recording which has multilevel recording marks having smaller width than the spot diameter of the reproducing laser light. SOLUTION: In the recording medium where a recording pattern having multilevel recording marks having two or more kinds of width and smaller width than the light spot at the wavelength used for reproducing is formed, a heat sensitive material layer 12 is used and irradiated with laser light in two or more levels of intensity or two or more discontinuous states and modulated at a higher frequency than the frequency of the period of the recording pattern so as to form a modified part of the pattern corresponding to the recording pattern. Then the layer is developed to form the objective recording pattern or to form a pattern to obtain the recording pattern.
