PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compressive self-ignition internal combustion engine capable of controlling a compressive self-ignition start time at an optimum timing for each combustion cycle. SOLUTION: An auxiliary chamber 9 smaller in volume than a combustion chamber 5 communicates with the combustion chamber 5 through an injection port 10 formed in an opening area smaller than the maximum cross section of the auxiliary chamber. A pressure sensor 13 detecting a gas reaction state in the auxiliary chamber is provided toward the auxiliary chamber 5. A control unit 21 detects the reaction start time based on a pressure detected by the pressure sensor 13, and adjusts a fuel injection amount or a fuel injection time according to a difference between the reaction start time and a target reaction start time pre-determined based on the operating conditions.
