PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording and reproducing device which can simultaneously house a first recording medium and a second recording medium housed in a carriage, can simplify the whole device and can alternatively record and reproduce the both housed recording media. SOLUTION: The recording and reproducing device is provided with an optical pickup 223 which is used both for recording and reproducing the first recording medium 1(2) and the second recording medium 4, a first turntable 212 for the first recording medium 1(2), a second turntable 207 for the second recording medium 4, a first recording and reproducing position F where the first recording medium 1(2) can be recorded and reproduced on the first turntable 212 and a second recording and reproducing position G where the second recording medium 4 can be recorded and reproduced on the second turntable 207. The first turntable 212 is constituted above the second turntable 207 with freely attaching/detaching and the first turntable 212 is raised by being linked with moving of the second recording medium 4 to the second recording and reproducing position G.
