SOLUTION: The history information of the retrieval words inputted from many unspecified users within the recent past fixed period and the number of times of the occurrence of the input is prepared in advance by a retrieval history log or the like. A character string inputted to the middle by the user trying to input a retrieval word is defined as an input character string, the character strings matching with the input character string at the front are retrieved in the history information and complementary candidate character strings are extracted corresponding to the number of times of the occurrence from the retrieved character strings and presented to the user (step 52).
