PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin cast slab of austenitic stainless steel, free from surface flaws and nonuniform pickling and excellent in surface characteristic. SOLUTION: The austenitic stainless steel excellent in surface characteristic has a composition containing, by mass, 0.005-0.05% Al and 0.0005-0.005% Mg and contains refractory metal oxides containing >=25% Al2O3 phase and/or at least one among MgO-Al2O3 spinel phases.
